Tarime. A mob yesterday stoned the motorcade of Tarime MP on the ticket of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Mr Nyambari Nyang’wine and the district council chairman, Mr Amos Sagara.Mr Nyang’wine and Mr Sagara were attacked at Nyamongo Village near the North Mara Gold Mine. The assailants seriously injured the bodyguards of the two leaders and damaged their cars.
The incident follows the police killing of five people, who reportedly invaded Barrick North Mara gold mine on Monday.Mr Nyang’wine, who escaped unhurt, said the villagers confronted them when they were on their way to console the families and relatives of five people killed.
The MP and the district council chairman had planned to address a public rally at Kewanja in Nyamongo, but a group of 100 people blocked and ordered them to take off their CCM uniforms.
“Within minutes they started pelting our vehicles with stones from all corners. Thank God my guards confronted them, enabling me to escape into the safety of my car,” said the MP.
The attackers damaged some of the cars in the convoy and injured some members of his entourage, mostly guards.
He mentioned some of the damaged cars as a Land Cruiser belonging to the department of education, which was being used by the Tarime district council chairman, a Toyota RAV4 and a Toyota Prado.
The incident occurred at 11am. Speaking later, Mr Nyang’wine warned Nyamongo villagers against being used by rival politicians for their personal gain.
He claimed that opposition politicians were inciting residents in the area to invade the North Mara Gold Mine.
“We came here to console the bereaved families and relatives, but opposition politicians have turned this into a political agenda, which is dangerous,” he said.He said he intended to exchange ideas with the locals on how to end killings in the area that go in tandem with invasions of the gold mine.
