A labourer working at a grain market in Golewal village near Faridkot tried to commit suicide on Wednesday afternoon by setting himself on fire after pouring an inflammable liquid. Veer Singh was rescued by other labourers working at the mandi.
In his statement to the police, Veer said the slow movement of grain from the mandis to godowns was very frustrating for labourers like him as they were not being given any work and hence could not earn anything. Under such extreme circumstances, he said, he had no option but to end his life.
Hundreds of labourers working in Golewal and nearby grain markets came out on the streets after the incident and staged a protest, blocking the vehicular traffic on the main Faridkot-Ferozepur road.
The mandi caters to nearby villages of Pakhi, Maluka and Khugiana. The wheat coming to the market has been purchased by PUNSUP and around 60,000 bags are lying here waiting to be lifted and shifted to godowns. Around 4 lakh bags are lying in the open in Faridkot district alone.
