CANCUN – ONE prisoner died and at least three others were injured in a riot on Wednesday in a jail in the south Mexican resort city of Cancun, an official said.
The riot broke out as prisoners protested a reduction in food rations, and some inmates seized firearms from their guards, Carlos Bibiano Villa, the Quintana Roo state public security minister, told journalists.
Police clashed with the rioters and later took control of the jail, he added.
Mexican jails, which house some 222,000 prisoners, are notoriously overpopulated and often the scene of riots as well as mass breakouts. — AFP
