Andhra villagers beat up MLA, others to protest mining project

Tribal women chased and beat up a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA from Andhra Pradesh while protesting a China clay mining project in Visakhapatnam district on Tuesday.

The legislator from Araku constituency, Siveru Soma, was targeted in Saray village for “ignoring the people”. He had gone to speak to the villagers along with Dumbriguda Mandal president Korra Dhanna Rao and others when they faced the tribals’ ire as people feared environmental hazard from the project.

The mob comprising mostly women first gave a sound thrashing to the Mandal president and manhandled the MLA. Both were then shoved around and chased for over 1 km. The agitated villagers also showered them with cow dung and mud and targeted their vehicles.

The MLA had to run for his life.

The tribal people of the area were enraged after the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board cancelled the mandatory public hearing of the project fearing trouble. They want the government to cancel the mining lease granted to a local entrepreneur.
