NARAYANGANJ, May 5 (UNB): At least 30 garment workers were injured when some miscreants attacked them while staging demonstration in protest against the closure of their factory at Adamjee EPZ on Thursday.
Vehicular movement on Narayanganj-Demra-Adamjee Road came to a halt for an hour following clashes between the attackers and the readymade garments (RMG) workers.
Police said the authorities closed the Indian-owned Epic Garments Factories at Adamjee EPZ on Thursday for an indefinite period as a sequel to Wednesday’s workers’ unrest over the beating of a sewing operator.
As the workers saw the closure notice on Thursday morning they got furious. Several thousand workers took to the streets at 8.0am and demonstrated against the closure of the factory.
Workers alleged that when they were demonstrating some cadres led by notorious Nur Hossain and Nazrul Islam attacked them with sticks and weapons in front of police that left 30 RMG workers wounded.
The angry workers blocked the Narayanganj-Demra-Adamjee highway for one hour in two phases and vandalised 6/7 vehicles.
Officer-in-Charge of Siddhirganj thana Kamrul Alam Molla said on information police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.
