Dhaka, May 1 (bdnews24.com) — Workers vandalised several open and serving restaurants on May Day—a holiday—in different parts of the capital.
Police said the vandalism started at 10am and lasted until noon in Karwanbazar, Gulistan and Hazaribagh areas.
Tejgaon police sub-inspector Mohammad Asad told bdnews24.com that the labourers vandalised eight to nine shops in Karwanbazar alone.
The shop owners were working for filing cases.
Bangladesh Hotel Restaurant and Sweetmeat Federation general secretary Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com, “A circular was issued to the owners asking them to keep their shops closed on May 1. But some owners still went ahead, threatened their employees, and kept their shops open.”
Hazaribagh police officer in-charge Rafiqul Islam said, “There was tension brewing among the hotel workers during noon, but it was resolved later.”
Jatrabari OC Abul Kashem told bdnews24.com that employees of a restaurant in north Jatrabari also vandalised a hotel.
The owner filed a general diary with the police, he added.
