MANILA, Philippines – Violence marred the eviction of residents at the Laperal compound in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati that was razed by fire last week.
The Makati police had to use water cannons to drive away residents who had barricaded the area early today. The residents, in turn, were armed with bottles, stones and wood.
Last week’s fire razed some 900 houses, leaving around 2,500 families homeless.
The Makati City government ordered their temporary evacuation until their subsequent relocation to Laguna and Bulacan.
In a statement, Makati City spokesman Joey Salgado said: “It is not a demolition or eviction. Some settlers have forced their way in despite the declaration of the area as danger zone. Laperal is not safe.Police is there to make sure they comply.”
