Penitentiary in Krasnokamensk set on fire by inmates

ULAN-UDE, April 17 (Itar-Tass) – A fire at penitentiary No. 10 in the city of Krasnokamensk, Trans-Baikal Territory, flared up as a result of an arson, committed by a group of convicts with prepared torches, Tass learnt at the Krasnokamensk inter-district prosecutor’s office.

“As a result of the fire, all living premises, several administrative buildings and auxiliary premises were gutted. The situation was exacerbated by strong gusts of winds and dry weather. Firefighting brigades managed to save only a small number of buildings,” the prosecutor’ s office noted.

The building of investigative ward No. 2, located on the grounds of the penitentiary, remained intact.

There were no casualties among guards and other service personnel of the penitentiary. All the inmates (around 1,000) were lined up on inspection grounds. They were issued winter clothing, and measures are taken to provide them with a breakfast, to accommodate some in the remaining buildings and to send to other prisons.

“The situation is under control of appropriate bodies who inspected the grounds of the penitentiary. They already began investigative, search and other urgent measures. To ensure security, the territory around the penitentiary was cordoned off,” noted the Krasnokamensk prosecutor’s office.

The local branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Trans-Baikal Territory reported that “arsons of three living premises for inmates were spotted at 03.30 local time”. The fire was localised by 05.00 by six firefighting brigades,” the local branch specified.
