Makerere University students on Strike

Makerere University students have gone on strike protesting the recent announcement by the University secretary proposing to increase tuition fees.

The students started early morning by moving around various faculties rallying other students to join them in the demonstration and on their way out of the gate, they were intercepted by police and started engaging in running battles.

Our reporter Abdul Kiyaga says that the student’s have so far burnt a Kiosk near the university guild canteen and the rioters broke into the MTN mobile money shop and made off with over Shs 700,000.

In a statement released by the University earlier on Friday Morning, the university said the Auditor General’s proposal to raise fees to sh6m per year had been shelved awaiting further consultations.
