Olten bomb targeted nuclear plant manager

A letter bomb that wounded two workers at Swissnuclear last month was destined for a top manager of the Mühleberg nuclear plant in the canton of Bern, according to plant’s operator.

Antonio Sommavilla, spokesman for BKW FMB Energy, which operates the plant, made the claim in an interview published on Sunday by the SonntagsZeitung newspaper.

On March 31 a letter sent by a group calling itself the Informal Anarchist Federation exploded in the Olten offices of Swissnuclear, a subsidiary of the company Swisselectric, in the canton of Solothurn.

The explosive device wounded one worker and nearly killed another.

The letter, written in Italian, mentions three Italian anarchists still held in Swiss jails for another bomb attack on IBM’s Swiss headquarters a year ago.

It is not clear why a letter bomb aimed at a BKW FMB Energy manager would be mailed to Swissnuclear.

The federal prosecutor says a criminal investigation into the letter bomb attack is under way.
