Dhaha, Apr 10 (bdnews24.com) — Temporary employees of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) have gone on a sit-in-strike demanding regularisation of their jobs.
The sit-in programme started at 10am on Sunday in front of the BTCL building at the city’s Eskaton Road, said Temporary Employees’ Welfare Council acting president Mohammad Moshiur Rahman.
“A total of 1,857 temporary employees have been serving for BTCL since 1997 for Tk 1,500 to 5,000 a month,” he told a gathering of the workers.
He said they had gone on movement on several occasions in the past as well to realise their demand but that went unheeded.
“We’ve been compelled to stage the sit-in as we cannot support our families with this meager wage due to price hike,” he said.
“The present government promised in its election manifesto to employ one person from each family. So, our jobs should be made permanent considering our miseries,” he said.
He also threatened to continue the programme until their demand was met.
