Panama – Panamanian university students who were protesting at the “Octavio Méndez Pereira” campus over raises in prices of taxi and bus fares were attacked Wednesday by anti-riot forces and classes were suspended indefinitely.
Central University authorities said the drastic measure responds to strong protests and clashes between units of crowd control and students, but clarified that classes will continue in the regional centers and areas of the country.
They added that the administrative work will not be interrupted in the “Central” and “Harmodio Arias Madrid” campus. The rest of the academic activities will also continue on a regular basis.
Students closed the access roads to facilities, especially the four paths of the important Via Transistmica, when the National Police Crowd Control arrived and reopened some of the trails.
That action provoked the students, and there were clashes between them and riot that forced the protesters to take refuge within campus facilities.
