Three arrested in CEPZ arson, looting case

CHITTAGONG, Apr 06: Detective police in the port city today arrested three youths for their alleged involvement in the arson, looting and attack on the newsmen last December during the CEPZ labour unrest.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (CMP DB) police raided Bandartilla area near the Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) last night and arrested Sohag, son of Idris Poddar of Bahulgachia village of Patuakhali, Sohag Sharif, son of Sobhan Sharif of Patuakhali and Ruhul Amin, son of Amzad Ali from village Mathbaria of Pirojpur district.

Assistant Commissioner of DB, CMP, Hasan Chowdhury said none of the arrested are workers or ever worked in the past in any factory in the CEPZ. “They are outsiders and came to the CEPZ area for arson and looting,” Chowdhury said.

Journalists who were attacked on December 12, 2010 in the labour unrest at the CEPZ gate and adjoining areas of Nimtala identified the youths as attackers and said some other youths led by arrested ones were involved in the attack on the journalists.

A senior staff photographer of the daily Inqilab in Chittagong, Kutub Uddin Chowdhury, was seriously injured in the attack. The youths snatched away his cell phone, damaged his camera. Kutub was hospitalised in critical condition and went through major surgery following the incident.

DB police have shown the three youths arrested in two cases filed in connection with the CEPZ incident and prayed for five days in police custody to interrogate them, AC Hasan said.
