Kenya: Youths in Bungoma Demand Casual Jobs

HUNDREDS of youths in Bungoma yesterday barricaded Webuye-Malaba highway to protest alleged refusal by a construction company to give them casual jobs. The demonstration caused a traffic snarl-up prompting the police to fire in the air and to disperse the youth.

The youth were protesting “importation of labour” from other regions by H-Young Company that is building the highway.”Are they saying the local youth doesn’t have experience of even digging trenches,” shouted one of the youths.

A 10-year-old boy was injured during the protests. He is admitted at the Bungoma District Hospital. The H-young Company that is working on the road is barely two months on-site. Efforts to get a comment from the company’s management were futile.
