– Teachers of the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) in DR Congo will embark on an indefinite work stoppage starting Monday, following an extraordinary meeting Saturday by the Association of Teachers of UNIKIN (APUKIN). “Despite the steps taken in the Ministry of Finance and the appeals made at our last general assembly, our arrears from September to December 2010 remain unpaid,” the teachers said in a statement obtained by PANA here Sunday. They accused the government of non-compliance with the memorandum of understanding signed in April 2010.
They deplored the fact that one year after signing the memorandum of understanding, the special status they sought has never been discussed at government level or in Parliament.
While the strike lasts, however, they planned to meet every two weeks to assess the government’s willingness to honor its commitments.
