Khulna, Apr 2 (bdnews24.com) — Authorities have closed Sagar Jute Spinning Mill in the district for an indefinite period following a labour unrest.
A notice hung on Saturday morning said the authorities in a meeting with the leaders of Workers-Employees Union on Mar 31 increased the wages and other financial benefits following their demand.
“Even then the workers stopped their works around 3pm the same day, creating disorder in the mill and causing financial losses,” the notice said.
It said the workers also vandalised the office and confined high officials till 1am. “Therefore, the authorities have decided to keep the mill closed as there was no congenial atmosphere to operate it.”
Workers-Employees Union general secretary Abdus Sobhan said the workers had long been demanding that their wage be raised to Tk 150 from Tk 100 a day.
“But the authorities have increased the wage by only Tk 10, angering the workers,” he added.
The private sector mill was set up on a five acres of land at Senhati of Dighalia Upazila in 1983. Currently, the mill has 325 permanent and 700 temporary workers, and 102 employees.
