Honduran Health Workers Support Teachers’ Strike

TEGUCIGALPA, March 29 (BERNAMA-NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Honduran health workers are on strike protesting the proposed reduction of their pensions and to support a teachers’ strike.

The strike in the health sector have joined a teachers’ strike that began on March 19 to reject the privatisation of education and to demand the unpaid back wages of nearly 6,000 teachers.

Both unions oppose a Stand-By Arrangement signed by the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which would decrease the benefits of members of the Institute of Retirements and Pensions for Public Employees and of the Teachers’ Institute of Retirement Planning.

According to union leaders, the IMF arrangement also includes dismissals and the dismantling of union organisations.
