BIRGUNJ/ITAHARI: The industrial closure effective in the Sunsari-Morang Industrial Corridor for the past three days, has spread to the Birgunj-Pathalaiya Industrial Corridor with agitating workers shutting down a thousand industries there today.
Unified CPN-M trade union All Nepal Revolutionary Trade Union Federation close to Mohan Baidhya faction, All Nepal Trade Union Federation Pressure Group and Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Nepal aligned Factory Workers Forum-Nepal called the shutdown to protest the 11-point deal reached between three major trade unions, namely, All Nepal National Trade Union Federation, General Federation of Nepalese Trade Union and Nepal Trade Union and Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry on March 24 .
Protesting workers manhandled Narayani Zone Vice Chairman of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Union at Birgunj-Pathalaiya Industrial Corridor today. A group of demonstrators vandalised Bahuari-based National Polyplast Industry. Property worth Rs 3 million was damaged in the incident. Coordinator Badri Bajagain of All Nepal Revolutionary Trade Union Federation close to Mohan Baidhya said they were compelled to shut the industries as the deal between the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and three major trade unions was against the Labour Act.
Meanwhile, industrialists have warned of indefinite industrial closure if the government does not create conducive environment for opening industries within two days. Chairman of Birgunj chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Ashok Temani warned they would padlock the industries indefinitely if the government did not open them within two days. He urged political parties and government to settle the problem at the earliest.
Meanwhile, agitating workers vandalised Surya Nepal Garment at Sunsari-Morang Corridor. Seven workers were injured in a clash between workers and police at Sunsari’s Ghoplaitole-based Wood Panel Private Limited Plywood Industry.
