Death of RMG worker sparks protest

Angry garment workers vandalised over 50 vehicles and set fire to four buses on the Dhaka-Gazipur highway Sunday morning protesting the death of a fellow worker.

Police said a garment worker was killed and three others were injured when a passenger bus of Nirapad Paribahan hit them at Naljani at about 7:45am.

The dead was identified as Ataur Rahman, 26, a knitting operator of Body Fashion garment factory.

Hearing the news, workers of Body Fashion and other garments blocked the Dhaka-Gazipur highway, ransacked vehicles and set the buses ablaze.

At one stage, chase and counter chase ensued between transport workers and garment workers, leaving 25 people injured.

On information, police rushed to the spot and charged batons on the workers to bring the situation under control.

Transport movements on Dhaka-Gazipur, Gazipur-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh remained suspended till around 10:30am following the incident.
