There was tension yesterday in Oba community, Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the killing of a youth by policemen.
Youths took to the streets, setting up bonfires. They burnt a police patrol vehicle.
They also attempted to torch a police post in Ichi, Ekwusigo Local Government.
Vehicular movement on the Oba-Nnewi Road and the Onitsha-Owerri Road was disrupted as the rampaging youths blocked the roads.
Sources said the incident, which occurred around 7am, recorded the second casualty when a stray bullet hit a commercial motorcyclist.
They said: “When the protest started, the police reinforced and shot into the air to scare the youths from setting ablaze the police station.
“In the process, a stray bullet hit and killed a commercial motorcyclist, who was at the scene of the protest.”
The first victim, simply identified as Ogalanya, was shot in his house when he tried to run away from a police team, which was said to have come to arrest him.
The leader of the youths, Dozie Nweke, condemned the incident. He urged the youths to remain calm, saying dialogue remains the best option in conflict resolution.
He said the police action was premeditated, especially since the victim was unarmed.
A community leader, who pleaded for anonymity, said policemen should be made to undergo psychiatric tests before posting.
Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the incident. He, however, insisted it was accidental.
He said policemen on patrol were alerted that armed robbers were operating in the area which made them to respond. He said the victim was killed accidentally.
He said the policeman, who fired the shot, had been arrested.
