Industries pose threats to local communities

DHADING: The industries established in Naubise-Bishaltar corridor in Dhading have sparked protest in local communities. The locals in Naubise-1 have padlocked KP Cement Industries for causing pollution in the village.

Meanwhile, more than a dozen gas plants, located at a short distance and in the middle of human settlement in VDCs including Naubise, Thakre, Bhumesthan, Baireni, Pida and Benighat have posed additional threat to locals. The locals claim that gas plants are being constructed in the area, influencing certain individuals and VDC secretaries, and without consulting the locals.

Owing to the short distance to Kathmandu and growing insecurity in tarai region, a number of gas plants are being constructed. The plants of gas companies constructed include Metro Kathmandu, Sugam, Siddhartha, HP, Shreekrishna, Baba, Koshi and Om.

Local lawyer, Lekhanath Niroula said the industries must consult the locals on environmental assessment and safety measures through public notice. “But the industries are being established secretively and the concerns raised by locals are also ignored,” he lamented. The environmentalists too point towards the possible disaster in case of leakage at gas plants.
