Police arrest 12 Zaria protest suspects

The police in Zaria, Kaduna State, have  arrested 12 persons in connection with a protest by some youths over power outage and lack of water.

Police Area Commander  Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that the protesters were Almajiris (street urchins).

He said the police are investigating the incident.

Sources said protesting youths blocked the road linking Zaria with other parts of the town over  an alleged nine-month blackout by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and lack of water.

Acting Chairman of Zaria Local Government Alhaji Lukman Musa told NAN that  a transformer would soon be installed in the area.

Musa appealed to the public, especially youths, not to take the law into their hands.
