The National Police says it will allow its new detachment, assigned to clamp down on riots, to shoot rioters on sight if necessary.
National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said members of the squad would be trained in special skills to paralyze rioters.
“Of course, the use of firearms will not be meant to kill them but to paralyze people we strongly suspect as people provoking the riots,” Boy said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Boy asserted that a shoot-on-sight policy would be a final resort to stop rioters, adding that only a few officers would be authorized to open fire.
Most other members would use tear gas only, he said.
Boy added that the squad would be mobile and serve as reserve brigade.
“They will not automatically be deployed to every riot.”
National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo said members of the new detachment would be stationed at province-level police headquarters.
“I think this [plan] is the answer to problems such as those in Temanggung and Cikeusik,” Timur said, referring to attacks and vandalism of three churches and a Christian school in Temanggung, Central Java, and the mob lynching of three Ahmadis in Cikeusik, Banten, last month.
