Labour unrest fear shuts DEPZ garment factory

A garment factory was shut down at Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) in Savar for an indefinite period on Wednesday while another declared a one-day holiday fearing workers’ unrest.

Police said the authorities of A One Garments declared the factory closed for an indefinite period from Wednesday after its workers demonstrated at the factory till 8:00pm Tuesday demanding pay hike, Prothom Alo reports.

Workers came to know about the closure when they went to the factory to join work Wednesday morning.

Police dispersed the agitating workers when they were taking preparation for staging demonstration.

Meanwhile, the authorities of Helikon Garment declared the factory closed on Wednesday as the workers started demonstration demanding the same.

Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the incidents to the daily.
