Ten persons were injured at the weekend in Ikot Abasi Local of Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as thousands of women marched on the Ekparakwa-Ikot Abasi Road leading to the East-West Road.
The women, according to their leader Mrs. Mfon Uko, were protesting alleged land grabbing by Obong Nsima Ekere, chairman of the State Investment Promotion Agency (AKIIPOC).
She said they own the land on the stretch of Mkpat Enin-Ikot Abasi highway.
“If they take over this land what will we use to feed our children and cater for their education,” she said.
Traffic was stalled for several hours and Police from Ikot Abasi, Uyo, Abak, Onna and Oruk Anam tried in vain to control the angry women.
Ekere, who hails from the area, is the Deputy Governor-designate to Governor Godswill Akpabio for second term.
He denied the allegation, saying government wanted to acquire the land to build a ceramic industry.
The Commissioner for Lands, Bassey Antai, could not be reached for comments.
