Munshiganj, Feb 2 (bdnews24.com) — Fourteen more suspects have been arrested in connection with Monday’s clash between police and protesters in Srinagar, which left one officer dead and several others injured.
The arrests took place on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, pushing the number of people detained to 20.
Srinagar police chief Shakhawat Hossain told bdnews24.com that none of the prime suspects have yet been arrested.
Police have filed three separate criminal cases – one relating the death of sub-inspector Matiur Rahman, another to an arson attack on a police post, and a third to an attack on police by a crowd of protesters.
Rahman was killed and at least 42 people, including four policemen, were injured as police moved to clear demonstrators opposed to the construction of the Bangabandhu International airport at Arrial Beel in Muinshiganj.
With police continuing their manhunt, our correspondent reported that residents in areas adjacent to Arrial Beel had set up check-posts at entrances to their villages to block the police from entering.
