Report: Alexandria port is closed

Jan 31

Cairo – The port in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria, was closed Monday, reports said, as unrest in the city grows.

The coastal city to the west of Cairo is a major trading hub for Egypt, handling the majority of its external commerce.

Arab broadcasters al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya were broadcasting taped footage from the city, which showed heavy levels of violence in recent days, as protesters clashed with security forces.
