The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office says an officer with the Youth Development Facility in Eastman was hurt Sunday night after he was assaulted with a broomstick during a riot there.
Captain Tony Winborn, Public Information Officer for the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, says they received a call for assistance from the Eastman Youth Development Facility at 7:35 p.m. Sunday.
Winborn says several inmates assaulted a Juvenile Correctional Officer with a broomstick. Winborn says the officer suffered some bruises but was not taken to the hospital.
Winborn says more than 60 inmates at the center, which is run by the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, were involved in the riot. He says some inmates set small fires of bed linens and trash in at least one of the center’s dorms.
Officers from more than five law enforcement agencies responded to assist YDF officers.
Winborn says no inmates were injured. He says he does not know how the riot began.
Winborn says officers had the riot under control by 9:00 Sunday night. He says the Eastman facility is the only Level 5 Security facility in the state for juvenile offenders, that’s the highest level security for a youth center.
He says law enforcement responded to a riot and escape at the same facility in May 2010.
