Cairo – More than 450 people in Egypt have been arrested for looting during the unrest the past several days and are now in the hands of the military, according to reports on Sunday.

Some of those detained were captured by local neighbourhood defence committees, set up by citizens concerned over looting and seeking to protect their families and properties.

Of those arrested, 250 were in Alexandria and Ismaliya, al-Arabiya reported.
