GADIVEMULA (Kurnool): Police fired in the air when a protest by workers of a cement factory turned violent at Gadivemula in Kurnool district on Sunday. The workers were demanding ex gratia for a fellow worker who died in the plant on Saturday.

The workers staged protests in front of Jindal cement factory at Bikakalagudur in Gadivemula mandal on Sunday demanding compensation for the family of Ramachandra, 43, who died while attending on some construction works in the plant on Saturday.

They blamed the negligence of the factory management and shouted slogans demanding ex-gratia. Ramachandra fell from the top of a beam and died while carrying out the works.

When the workers did not relent, the factory management called police. The angry workers pelted stones on to the cops and damaged a police jeep. While six cops suffered injuries in the stone-pelting, some workers were also injured when they jostled with the cops to gain an entry into the factory.
