Protesters occupy Greek highway toll stations

Activists angry at rising charges for highway tolls occupied 19 toll stations across Greece for two hours Sunday, raising the bars and letting vehicles pass through without paying.

Some 400 people gathered at the toll station nearest to the capital Athens holding a banner saying “No to tolls – Free highways for all – We are not paying and neither should you.” Most passing drivers honked their horns in approval. The activists object to the collection of tolls by private contractors who operate the booths and are also involved in expanding and maintaining the country’s highway network. (AP)
