Kyrgyz teachers threaten nationwide strike

BISHKEK – Kyrgyz schoolteachers gave an ultimatum to the government concerning their demand for pay raises, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported January 3, quoting Asylbek Toktogulov, leader of the Education Workers’ Trade Union.

The union gave the government until the end of January to raise teachers’ salaries fourfold or risk a nationwide strike. The teachers’ demand is unaffordable, the Finance Ministry replied.

Teachers earn on average US $30-40 monthly.
