Iesco, Pak Post employees stage protest against privatisation

ISLAMABAD: The anti-privatisation movement gained steam on Tuesday as workers of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) and Pakistan Post took out rallies against the proposed sale of their enterprises and warned that workers would unite to defeat the agenda of the international financial institutions (IFIs) at all costs.

A large number of workers associated with Iesco and other Wapda distribution companies held a rally from the National Press Club to D-Chowk while hundreds of postal workers took out a rally from the GPO to the National Press Club under the auspices of the Postal Action Committee.

Present in both rallies were a number of other trade unionists and progressive political workers, including Nazir Javed of the PWD, Malik Maqbool of PTCL, Azad Qadri of the Socialist Movement Pakistan, Farzana Bari of the Awami Jamhoori Forum and Aasim Sajjad of the Workers’ Party Pakistan.
