Munshiganj, Dec 27 (bdnews24.com)—Locals have blocked Dhaka-Mawa-Khulna highway demanding shifting of the proposed Bangabandhu airport and ‘Bangabandhu City’ from Munshiganj.
The government is planning to build an airport and a separate housing estate ‘Bangabandhu City’ in three upazilas-Srinagar, Nawabganj, Dohar- acquiring some 25,000 acres of land.
Tenants of the area are reluctant to hand over the land, most of which are arable.
Some 30,000 people of Srinagar Upazila on Monday formed a human chain around 10am on the highway protesting government initiative. Locals of Nawabganj and Dohar held similar agitation programmes in last couple of days.
The locals have also threatened to resort to non-stop agitation programme until the authorities revoke the project, Shrinagar police chief Mahbub Alam told bdnews24.com.
Local administration has been trying to disperse the mass and keep the situation under control. They have informed higher authorities and awaiting further instruction, the officer added.
