Joint security forces in West Midnapore had to resort to lathicharge on a group women — allegedly supporters People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) — after they snatched two persons from the forces.
The police said the men were arrested on suspicion of involvement with Maoists.
Two companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried out search operations in Panchami village in West Midnapore and found landmines and a container of explosives. The arrests were made at the time.
According to senior police officers, while Central forces were trying to return to the base, they were stopped by the women who demanded that the men be released immediately and snatched them from custody.
The police said they had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. A few women were injured and had to be admitted in Jhargram hospital. The locals claimed they had held a protest since the police were helping armed harmads get into the village.
On Saturday, a jawan, Visram Kumar, had been killed and several others injured when Maoists triggered an explosion near Jhalda in Purulia. The condition of the four jawans injured in the incident is stable.
