Workers of a garment factory in the city’s Kodomtoli area staged a sit-in demonstration Wednesday morning protesting the closure of the factory.
The authorities declared ‘ABC Dyeing Factory’ shut for an indefinite period on Monday following a workers’ unrest over wages. Tuesday was the weekly holiday of the factory.
Officer-in-Charge Aiyubur Rahman of Kodomtoli Police Station told The Daily Star that the workers went to the factory gate at around 8:00am Wednesday and started the demonstration demanding reopening of the factory.
The workers said the authorities are paying them as per the new wage scale implemented from November. But comparatively new workers are getting more benefit than the senior ones as per the new pay scale, they claimed.
The workers had been demonstrating for the last few days over the matter, the OC said adding that the demonstrators left the place at about 2:00pm.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, workers of Moonlit Garments located at Targach in Gazipur Sadar upazila blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway since 9:00am Wednesday for the same reason.
Transport movement on the highway got halted for two hours following the blockade.
On information, police rushed to the spot. They chased and dispersed the workers at bout 11:00am.
The authorities however said that they would look into the matter, said a correspondent from Gazipur.
Joydevpur police Chief Abdur Rashid confirmed the incident.
