Nilphamari, Dec 19 (bdnews24.com)—Workers of a garment factory at Uttara export processing zone in Nilphamari have demonstrated for reinstatement of a sacked worker and release of two others.
Thousands of workers of Uttara Sweater Manufacturing Company on Sunday morning brought out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner.
Director general of the zone Hafizul Islam said two workers — Noor Alam, 22, and Matiur Rahman, 26 — were arrested on charges of creating unrest at the sweater factory and obstructing other workers from work.
They protested expulsion of another worker, Omar Faruk, “who was sacked on Dec 9 as per rules,” he added.
The two workers facing a case under Speedy Trial Act were sent to jail on Sunday. They were picked up from their homes earlier the day.
The agitating workers took to the streets to press their eight-point demands.
First, they surrounded residence of Sadar Upazila chairman Jainal Abedin and later office of the deputy commissioner for half an hour and submitted the memorandum.
Acting police superintendent Nurul Islam said law and order at the zone was normal.
Police and RAB members, led by executive magistrate Mamun Akhter, were deployed at the scene.
