Death of prisoner triggers protest in jail; probe ordered

Prisoners of the Central Jail, Ferozepur, protested inside the jail on Thursday after an inmate, Bansa Singh, died in the prison toilet. The prisoners alleged that Bansa was not keeping well for the last two days, but the jail authorities did not ensure his treatment.

According to reports, Bansa collapsed in the toilet in the morning and died. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to know the cause of his death. While it is suspected that Bansa died of heart attack, his post-mortem report is awaited. He was about 60 years old and had no previous medical history. A resident of Baghapurana, Bansa was serving a year’s term in a case registered under the NDPS Act in 2005. His sentence started on July 17, 2010.

Sources said the protesting prisoners did not hand over Bansa’s body to the jail authorities for three hours. Heavy police force was called to take the body in their possession. The prisoners protested against “unhygienic conditions” inside the jail and “lack of proper response from the staff in case someone is sick”. Confirming the protest, Jail Superintendent Captain L S Jakhar said: “I pacified them (the protesters) after which they withdrew the agitation.”

The body was handed over to Bansa’s family members, who did not register any protest.
