Clashes erupt in Silwan

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Young residents of East Jerusalem gathered near a protest tent in the Al-Bustan neighborhood of Silwan on Friday and said they were harassed and assaulted by a patrolling force of Israeli border guards, sparking clashes.

One young man said he and friends gathered in the area as a show of solidarity following the afternoon prayer, noting the neighborhood was tense on account of several pedestrian checkpoints police had erected at the entrances to Al-Bustan.

Fakhri Abu Diab, from the local committee, said that shortly after the noon prayer residents reported hearing shots fired, with teens and young men targeted by tear-gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets.

An Israeli police spokesman could not be reached by phone for comment.
