RMG unrest at Shyampur

Dhaka, Dec 10 (bdnews24.com)— Workers of a garment factory at the city’s Shyampur industrial zone demonstrated, demanding immediate implementation of the new wage scale announced for the readymade garment workers.

Witnesses said 400 workers of Imam Garments went on a rampage on its premises at Kadamtali and took top officials hostage around 11:30am on Friday, after an operator, Mohammad Alamin, was allegedly beat up by its general manager following an argument over the wage structure.

Contacted, assistant general manager of the factory Shahin Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the workers were getting their wages since November last as per the new wage structure, but they were demanding even more.

He alleged that some workers damaged computers and machineries in the factory following a rumour in the morning that the authorities were not paying their wages as per the new structure.

He also alleged that the agitated workers confined their top officials, including general manager Kamrul Hasan and him, into a room.

Operator Alamin alleged that only the newly recruited workers were being paid in line with the government wage structure, not the old ones, an allegation denied by the factory officials.

Police said the situation is now normal.
