Rioting inmates set fire at Gatineau prison

Sun Dec. 05

Inmates set fire to a mattress during a riot at a Gatineau prison Saturday night.

Police arrived at the Centre de Détention de Hull just before 11 p.m. and evacuated 20 prisoners who were rioting inside the facility. The prisoners were brought outside where they began to throw rocks at police, said Sgt. Denny Proulx of the Gatineau police.

No prisoners escaped and no injuries were reported. The fire was quickly brought under control by emergency crews.

Several television sets were smashed during the riot.

The Quebec provincial police force, the Sûreté du Québec, is investigating.
