QUEBEC – Steel riot fences, guarded by police officers in riot gear and equipped with plastic hand cuffs, guarded the Quebec Hilton on Monday in anticipation of a student demonstration against new tuition fee hikes.
Inside the hotel, Education Minister Line Beauchamp and Finance Minister Raymond Bachand met with about 100 university and education department officials to discuss ways to fill Quebec’s higher-education financing gap.
Universities complain they are underfunded.
Tuition fees have been rising gradually in Quebec, but remain the lowest in Canada, and about one-third the amount of tuition fees in neighbouring Ontario. The students argue higher fees would limit access to university and would saddle students with an additional debt burden.
