10 hurt in Ashulia RMG unrest

At least 10 people, including two policemen were injured, in a clash between the law enforcers and workers of a garment factory at Jamgara in Ashulia Saturday morning.

Sources said nearly 1,800 agitating workers of ‘Universe Knitwear Factory’ of the area clashed with police during a demonstration after the authority shut down the factory in the morning.

Officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station Sirajul Islam said the clash ensued when the agitating workers tried to put a barricade on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway near Jamgara Govt Primary School at about 11:00am.

Chases and counter-chases also took place during the clash that left the people injured, the OC added.

Managing Director (MD) of the factory Hossain Shah Zaved however claimed that the factory management compelled to shut down the factory temporarily fearing more unrest.

The workers had been agitating from a few days demanded almost double pay in per piece production of sweater that Zaved termed as unusual.

The production at the factory will resume once the situation came to normalcy he said, adding that a negotiation between the workers and management was going on to resolve the crisis.
