QUETTA: The police and Frontier Corps (FC) resorted to baton charging the protesting students belonging to the Baloch Students Organisation (BSO) at the University of Balochistan (UoB) campus on Monday.
According to reports, two students were injured in tear gas shelling and baton charge by the police and FC personnel and several arrests were made. Different factions of the BSO had given a boycott call of all classes on Monday to protest against the discriminatory attitude of the chairperson of the Pharmacy Department of the university, denying admission to the Baloch students.
The protesting students accused the chairperson of a bias attitude and approach towards Baloch students and providing merely 11 admissions to Baloch students and the remaining 60 seats were given to others. The students boycotted the classes and staged a protest demonstration in front of the vice chancellor’s office. The protesting students had just reached before the Arts Faculty of UoB when FC personnel and the police rushed there and fired teargas shells in order to disperse them. They also resorted to baton charge and rounded up some students protesting against discrimination by their teachers.
The entry and exist points of the campus remained closed for an hour and no one was allowed to enter or go out. The law enforcers threw a cordon around the campus maintaining order and peace. Several students have been rounded up and others suffered injuries during the baton charge. However, the university police said that two students were detained and others managed to escape from the scene. The incident triggered panic among the students especially girl students as they were confined to the campus for more than an hour. muhammad zafar
