Wildcat strike in Dinajpur mine

Dinajpur, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com)—Workers of Dinajpur hard rock mine at Madhyapara went on a wildcat strike on Saturday in protest against the retrenchment of some fellowmen and filing of ‘false’ cases against their leaders.

Witnesses said some 300 agitated workers of Madhyapara Granite Company Limited, the operator of the mine, were staging demonstrations in front of its main gate, prompting the authorities to deploy police.

Police said the trouble started when workers prevented some newly recruited officials from entering their offices, as the authorities ignored the workers’ demand for regularising their jobs.

Workers’ union general secretary Mostafizur Rahman, who was terminated recently, told bdnews24.com that they resisted nine assistant managers, recruited on Nov 23, from joining their work.

Mostafiz alleged that the company has got an adequate number of officials for running its three shifts, but the workers now it has can only operate one shift. But, the authorities are reluctant to recruit workers, forcing them to go on the wildcat strike.

Meanwhile, Parbatipur police chief Nuruzzaman said GM Bashar filed a case against five named and seven unnamed workers for breaching discipline by calling the strike.
