KHARAGPUR: Around 1,500 labourers of Ram Swarup Louha Udyog, a steel plant, blocked NH-6 for nearly five hours on Sunday after the plant authority put up a notice on the factory gate at Kharagpur, declaring suspension of work.
From 9 am to 1.45 pm, vehicular movement came to a halt on the highway because of the blockade. It was withdrawn only after the block development officer announced a tripartite meeting between the labour minister, the steel plant authority and the labourers on Tuesday.
AITUC state secretariat member Biplab Bhattacharjee complained that there has been no production at the factory for the last eight months. “Moreover, machine parts were being smuggled out of the factory. The labourers are not receiving any salary. So they gheraoed Satrajit Sharma, a member of the board of directors, general manager Nabin Agarwal and additional general manager Pratik Ghosh at the factory till midnight on November 8. On Sunday, the authorities put up a six-page notice, citing the gherao as an unacceptable labour unrest,” he said.
