BAGHDAD — An Iraqi official says up to 20 detainees have escaped from a pretrial detention facility in Baghdad during a riot.
A police official at the Risafa lockup in eastern Baghdad says a group of detainees started a disturbance on Wednesday evening. He says they began shouting in one of the facility’s eleven sections.
The official says as many as 20 detainees slipped out when riot police were sent in to control the group.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
Risafa is one of Baghdad’s main detention facilities for suspects awaiting trial. It is located across from the Interior Ministry building.
Anti-riot officers restored order after about an hour.
