Women charged with arson in Mehserle sentencing protest

OAKLAND — A 27-year-old woman suspected of setting a fire to a garbage can during the Mehserle sentencing protests last week has been charged with arson, authorities said.

Stephanie McGarrah, a transient, could face 16 months to three years in prison if convicted of the felony charge. Authorities said she was observed setting fire to a Waste Management garbage can in the 1700 block of 6th Avenue on Friday night.

Police are reviewing reports from the night, when 152 people were arrested, and will present additional cases to the District Attorney’s Office as warranted. At least four of those arrested had existing warrants, authorities said.
