Prison officers want Tasers after near-riot

The prison officers’ union is using a near riot at a Christchurch jail at the weekend to strengthen its calls for stab-proof vests and pepper spray or Tasers.

The Corrections Association says five prisoners attacked two guards before about 30 other prison officers arrived to help.

Other prisoners in the unit refused to return to their cells and the union says they were not co-operating with staff.

Association President Bevan Hanlon says staff should not be responding to any incidents of violence in prison without proper protection.
