Dominican authorities say a police officer has died of gunshots fired during a local protest demonstration.
Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco says officers have identified four suspects but that no one has been arrested.
The shooting occurred Wednesday in the town of Navarrete, where activists blocked streets and forced businesses to close to demand construction of more roads and a stop to repeated blackouts. They also denounced the police killing of a protester in a nearby town last week.
Navarrete official Rodolfo Payero said police injured three people when they returned fire after the gunfire, which hit an officer in his patrol car.
